Betty White Nails SNL

Last Saturday's SNL with host Betty White brought in the highest ratings for the 35 year old show in 18 months with an 8.8 rating. How's that for a funny 88 year old comedic actress who knows how to keep her comedy fresh? Betty was charming, nervous, hilarious. She was in every sketch and shared the stage with a reunion of funny SNL ladies such as Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon and Maya Rudolf. Rooting for her was easy, but she didn't need it. That lady can bring on the salty material with a sweetness and bawdiness that could make Bea Arthur blush. From the NPR Muffin Sketch to Scared Straight to MacGruber's Grandma to head banging Betty in an SNL Digital Short, Betty held to the funny all night long. And why not? Keeping up with edgy comedy and rolling with the flow is Betty's style. It transcends age.

Here's a sketch from rehearsal that was cut. Damn you, time constraints! Here's Bronx Beat.

And a Debbie Downer sketch that was cut...First 30 Rock and now this terrific sketch. Did Rachel smack Lorne's dog or something? Why cut Rachel?

Betty White to Co-Host SNL

Nice work Facebook! Betty White will co-host Saturday Night Live on the Mother's Day edition on May 8th. Also co-hosting will be Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon.

Lorne Michaels: "I can't think of a better way to spend Mother's Day weekend than with Betty White."

Not to be a bummer, but this is the first Mother's Day without my Mom who passed away in November. It's a small consolation, but it will brighten a somewhat somber weekend. Betty White is a great surrogate TV mom.

Betty White to Appear on SNL

Betty White has confirmed that she will be appearing on SNL sometime this season. It's hard to say if she will actually host. Sage minds would suggest that the 88 year old actress and comedian might not be strong enough to carry on the weighty and stressful job of hosting. Nevertheless, it's nice to see Betty fans on Facebook have swayed Lorne Michaels into action. Look out for Betty soon.

Zach Galifianakis to Host SNL March 6th

Zach Galifianakis will be hosting SNL on March 6th with musical guest Vampire Weekend. (Source: NBC)

Star of HBO's Bored to Death, FunnyorDie's Between Two Ferns, and big time theatrical hit The Hangover, Zach's brand of surreal humor will lend a nice insane twist to the show. It's great to see him reach his current streak of success. He was on Late Night with Conan O'Brien a few years back. He tinkered dreamily on a piano while cracking funny and brilliantly clever comments. He just had that something. Comedy fans at LA' s Largo, a venue where he performed often in those days (and today as well), knew of his brilliance. The Late Night gig was a glimpse into their secret. On that night, I could sense we'd be hearing more from him. He was endearing, sublime, furious, sweet and raunchy. How wonderful to see his talents recognized and now allowed to flourish on one of comedy's biggest stages. I'm looking forward to this!

Betty White Should Host SNL

Various mega blogs like The Huffington Post and Gawker are reporting and supporting the grassroots effort to get the wonderful Betty White on Saturday Night Live as guest host. Facebook has a fan group that's growing everyday with votes, and the momentum to get White in front of that SNL camera is one that can't be ignored.

After 35 years on air, why hasn't Betty been on this show yet? After sitting (and at times avoiding) some recent guest host stints that resemble the cast list of Twilight or a Disney teen fest, why hasn't the terrifically acerbic, sweet like vinegar White been asked? At 88 years old, this lady hasn't lost one bit irony and wit. Her zingers are juicy. Her timing is impeccable. Her sense of humor is current in that it captures that "thinking on top of one's intelligence" brand of comedy, producing clever quips that are fresh.

I met Betty White years ago during an NBC thing, and she was sweet, kind and professional. Seeing a surge in her already esteemed career is refreshing. I'm hoping Lorne Michaels will listen to those internet voices and give that lady a shot.

Her appearance in this Super Bowl Snickers commercial should seal the deal:
