When Comedy Returned Post 9-11

Eleven years ago today, I was stuck on the now defunct #9 train heading downtown to West 18th Street to get to my job in Chelsea. We were stopped between 28th and 23rd streets due to, what the MTA engineers are trained to say, "an incident downtown, possible sick passenger".

All I could think of on that post Labor Day morning was how I hated the white capri pants I wore and the ugly lavender tank top that did nothing for my large torso. We were stuck for only ten minutes, but we slowly made our way south. Finally, I got off at 18th & 7th and headed for La Petite Abielle, for my morning coffee routine.

Up on sixth avenue, I saw a crowd on the corner looking downtown. That spot. The corner of 18th and 6th, held a picture postcard view. Every morning I stood there, waiting for the light, marveling at the perfection of this small plot of real estate - 6th at 18th - west side of the street. Look left and you can see the Empire State Building loom large overhead. Look right, and you'd see the majestic giant towers of the WTC, peering over buildings and trees. Best spot in the world, I thought. Thank God I'm a New Yorker.

That day, when I joined the crowd of people standing on the corner, I looked to my right, and saw that horrible site. The north tower ripped open with black horrible smoke pouring. Flames.

"A 737 plane hit the tower." said a man with a transitor radio eaplug in his ear. "And another small plane hit the other one", a vision a bit harder to see since the damage of the south tower was partially obstructed by the north one.

I started shaking.

Then a song entered in my head. A Tori Amos song that always comes to mind when I'd hear of a plane crashing:

"Not the red baron. Not Charlie Brown. Think I've got the message figured. Another pilot down."

It was a perfect day. Clear as a bell. What's wrong with air traffic control?

I was shaking as I crossed the street, zombie-like - looking into the eyes of people heading to where I had just been, looking to see if they knew, if they had already seen the damage - looking at them as if to say, your eyes about to see something horrible.

When I got to the office and watched the news, it became clear. Terrorists did this.

That Amos earworm was still wiggling. The song would not leave my head:

"And are there devils with halos and beautiful capes, taking them to the flames, taking them to the flames."

Then as more planes crashed - one in the Pentagon and another in a field in PA, the tune in my brain changed to Dylan's "Masters of War".

My whole psyche is on a mixed playlist.

Life wasn't funny for a while. Some of my neighbors perished. The smoke wafted over the upper west side where I lived. The trains were a mess. And that smell. That acrid electrical burning rubber smell. For months, that smell. For a few weeks, Baseball stopped. Television stopped, save for constant news coverage.

Comedy stopped for weeks, especially the New York based talk shows. Dave, Conan, Jon - all shut down. Dark. But they returned a week later, these jesters, always ready with a satirical shot provided a mixture of confusion, anger and pain. As a comedy fan, I turned to these comic heroes for solace, and found comforted in their humble state, in how as New Yorkers themselves (adopted through years of living there) shared the experience, up close, with a skyline viewed every day, part of our landscape, now destroyed. In this historic time, they took to the camera with pain, confusion, caution, all too aware of the question, "Is it too soon to make joke?"

It turned out, a joke was exactly what we needed.

I've found a few videos on YouTube featuring Jon Stewart, Conan O'Brien and David Letterman dealing with the aftermath of the WTC attack. Sadly, SNL's return with Guiliani and Lorne Michael asking if it was okay to be funny again is lost to copyright issues.

Fear and Sanity in D.C.

Colbert and Stewart take over Washington DC this Saturday. Have you bought your Amtrak ticket? Found a Hotel? Packed your tent? Started bumming rides from creepy truck drivers on the NJ Turnpike? If not, you better get started. The 'Rally to Restore Sanity' and the 'March to Keep Fear Alive'will be swarming the National Mall in Washington this Saturday. If you can't be there, just fire up your TV to Comedy Central from 12noon - 3pm and make the choice to find sanity or be afraid of the world. It's your choice, people.

On another note, President Barack O'Bama was on the The Daily Show last night. At last, on the (sort of) eve of the big rally in Washington, the President took time out of his busy schedule while Stewart was in town to discuss what's been happening and why people are mad. It was an amazing moment. However, I fell asleep in the middle of the interview, so here's how it went down.

A 'Daily Show' Surprise

August is upon us, and it's week number two on Jon Stewart's dastardly handsome goatee. New episodes of Childrens Hospital is on the horizon, a new season of Mad Men is currently airing and summer movies are being released into the sea of sweaty humanity. The latest Adam McKay flick, The Other Guys, starring Will Farrell, Mark Wahlberg (and what? Rob Riggle?) is opening this Friday. This movie was filming all over the New York area last year, so I'm pretty stoked to see it.

Farrell has been doing the PR rounds and landed on The Daily Show last night, bringing with him a surprise guest. Spoiler: It's former Daily Show correspondent Rob Riggle!

Women of 'The Daily Show' Speak

Dear Women of the Daily Show,

Thank you for your incredible letter responding to Jezebel on the issue of the lack of women in comedy. Your hard work and dedication have gone unnoticed by the viewing public because you run such a smooth and difficult operation behind the scenes. We viewers tend to think is easy. Of course, it's not.

I always thought Jon Stewart was a decent man, probably difficult at times and demanding at best. Who wouldn't be? If any of us were in his shoes, we'd know that the glare of the public light is harsh, the deadlines until taping are brutal, and the need to create smart, mind blowing news commentary is mandatory. Knowing you all deal with the dynamics of a well respected fake news program that provides important commentary and calls out the hypocrisy in television news and politics, humbles me at best.

However.

You missed the point.

There was never any doubt that The Daily Show employs smart, hard working women behind the camera. The question lies in the fact that women are a scarce commodity as TDS correspondents. I don't know what really goes on behind the scenes or in the writer's room, because no - I don't work there. I'm a viewer with eyes and I can only calls them as I sees them.

There's been a lot of belly aching about the lack of females writing funny bits. Of course, there are ladies who play ball with the boys in the writer's room - Jessie Klein on SNL, Morgan Murphy on Fallon, but it's still an issue in the industry. It may be why I have been unable to try my hand at TV writing. The stories scare the b'geebs out of me.

Furthermore, in the group photo you've kindly provided, there are only two women that grace the camera as correspondents: Samantha Bee and Kristen Schaal. Both are rarely seen, especially the latter. I have no problem that after years of not adding much female talent to your roster, you find Maxim bunny and G4's Attack of the Show's Olivia Munn as a new face in the line up. She's cute and somewhat funny. But if you gave us a few more evenings of Bee or Schaal, you might even out the male to female on air ratio. Also, putting on a chick whose only background is showing her hottness in a lad mag and eating sausages on camera only solidifies the boys club rants.

So here's to the hard working women on The Daily Show. I admire your longevity and your smarts. I just wish you'd understand why Jezebel broached the issue of your program being a boys club. We as viewers and lovers of comedy only hear the words written and see the talent on camera. The testosterone out wieghs the estrogen here. It would be cool to view one or two more consistently contributing female correspondents. It wouldn't hurt if they wrote some of those words too. Ladies can roll with the punches with the big boys too. Tina Fey, anyone?

Also, saying a dude wrote your letter, doesn't really help you. I'm not being snarky, I'm just saying.

Sincerely yours,

Some nobody with a blog

Jon Stewart's Plea to Gretchen Carlson

Stewart never hesitates to call out Fox News' way of dumbing down the news with talking points that speak to the faction of Americans who believe a Bachelor Degree from an Ivy League school is a whole bunch of bunk-a-roo. Looks like the network is trying to dumb down the image of their talk show hosts as well.

Fox's Gretchen Carlson went to a whole bunch of classy schools, like Oxford (in England) and plays classical violin, but she had to go look up big words to describe them on air. Why that highfalutin' hussy. How dare she know what a dictionary is!

Over to you, Jon...

Yeah, I'm going to give this one to Philly. New York will win the world series, and Philly wins biggest douche fans who make Manchester United football louts look like Disney characters on a field day. Congrats, Philly!

Stephen Colbert is God

When Stephen Colbert was a correspondent on The Daily Show, I was so blinded by the quirky humor of Steve Carell that I hardly gave Little Bear a second thought. Of course "Even Stephven", the hilarious point-counterpoint talking head between the two Stephens remain in my memory (and at Comedy Central) to laugh at until I lose my mind, but I never gave Colbert the attention he was due. Even the past few years The Colbert Report has been slow going for me. His show has been making waves in political circles alongside Jon's Daily satire, but it took me until late last year to finally...finally love Stephen so much I want to day dream about him.

Last night sealed the deal. In the wake of Fox News' Glenn Beck's sanctimonious outcry for keeping his country safe from all the big bad liberals who worship Obama (which I don't buy for a minute - the guy is a comedian - his fake tears on air reveal his bad acting), Colbert lobbed a nice satirical serve in his direction last night. Sign me up for "The 10-31 Project".

Stewart and Cramer Face Off

With all the hullabaloo between Jim Cramer and Jon Stewart coming to a head on Thursday night, wouldn't you know it? I fell asleep. From what I did see in my wakeful state was Jim getting railed by Jon, who had plenty of video ammunition to prove that CNBC and all it's whiney hosts have nothing on the Daily Show Staff.

Alessandra Stanley covered the story...NYTimes.com

Word is - they ran long in the taping yesterday evening. Comedy Central has the uncut version. Here's part one. To see the rest, click to Comedy Central's video site:

Election Night, Office and Conchords

Colbert escapes to his happy place after Obama declared winner.

I don't know what I would have done these last two years of election campaign build up without "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report". Their humor decompressed the insanity and anger. The dynamic duo teamed up for special live election coverage, doling out hilarity during a very nervous night. Luckily Obama snagged enough electoral college votes to claim victory just before the show wrapped at 11pm EST, allowing Stewart the spine chilling honor to announce Obama as next the President of the United States. The cheers from the audience were exhilarating.

You can see the coverage in it's entirety at ComedyCentral.com.

Office Anticipation....

Well, the NBC promo overlords have provided a summary of tomorrow night's episode. Jim and Pam get bluetooths so they can spend every minute together. Why the hell is she still in New York?

Jim and Dwight freak out over the results of a customer survey, which should bring some long awaited Jim and Dwight interaction that's been sorely missing (along with Pam. Did I mention she's still in New York and no one is telling us why?)

Andy and Angela pick a wedding spot. Like I care. Really, I don't.

Michael is Holly-less.

After my dashed hopes for a splendid season after the sensational "Weight Loss" episode, I'm lukewarm. But I love Jim, and it sounds like a good Halpert episode.

"The Office: Customer Survey" airs Thursday on NBC at 9:30pm ET/8:30pm CT.

Here's the latest promo that includes some peaks at "30 Rock" where Ms. Winfrey herself will appear. Liz saying "Oprah!" is similar to the way I shout when I see a fresh new batch of cookies.

It's Business Time...

Although HBO has not yet released scheduling information on "Flight of the Conchords", Jemaine Clement and Brett McKenzie have been filming their second series in New York due to air sometime in 2009.
As reported by Jezebel, Clement and his wife Miranda Manasiadis have just welcomed a new baby boy named (deep breath) Sophocles Iraia Manasiadis Clement. The world just got cuter!

Political Satire in a National of Few Laughs

Bill Maher has been one of my favorite television comedic pundits since his days at Comedy Central. When his show "Politically Incorrect" made its way into the mainstream on ABC TV, he found himself fighting off the foes of liberal minded chatter. Unfortunately, Maher's time with ABC was cut short after September 11th, when he said something about Americans being terrorists, and well, the network didn't take kindly to that remark, so off he went. Thankfully HBO gave Maher another chance with "Real Time" and a platform to speak freely, passion and all.

It's not my intent to write too much about political humor despite the fact my favorite shows are "The Daily Show", "The Colbert Report", and to some extent "Saturday Night Live". The realities of this week's stock market plunge while the nation plows through a heated presidential campaign, rendering hatred from one party to another, has made me cling to the comedy of Jon Stewart and Bill Maher. It's no wonder their ratings have soared in recent months. It's not just because people want their news with a smile. It's due to laughter being the only way to ease the fear and anger that has been stirred by accusations, lies and ignorance. Stewart points out the insanity by showing its absurity through jokes and irony. Colbert pokes fun at the right wing by becoming a characterization of them. Bill Maher creates monologues and bits such as "Exit Strategy" and "New Rules" not just to speak of liberal views, but to peel away layers of bullshit and throw the truth in the face of those who won't listen.

As Stewart, Colbert and Maher continue to make America think intelligently about the ways of politics and the downcast news of the economy, there is always the sense that despite the turbulence, we will prevail. Thank God we have comedy. If it weren't for the laughs, I think I'd ride that hobo train to hell.

SNL Highlights from the past few politically charged weeks:
